  Ranking Process:
The Iowa Comparative Risk Assessment study was conducted from September 1995 through December 1998. The study incorporated public input derived from a series of town meetings and a letter survey, as well as input from 4 technical committees consisting of experts in the areas of human health, ecological systems, quality of life, and energy choices. Each technical committee produced a short list of issues posing environmental threats to Iowa and prioritized the issues in broad rankings of "severe," "high," "medium," and "low." The Public Advisory Committee reviewed the issues and the rankings of the public surveys and technical committees, and developed a list of 21 issues ranked in order of immediacy, i.e., which of the issues were most deserving of actions now or in the near future. The PAC also identified action steps that could be implemented to reduce the environmental threats related to each issue.
