  Project Description

  Geographical Coverage:
State of Mississippi

[ top ]

  Project Purpose:
To identify environmental issue areas that require additional resource allocations as part of the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality's strategic planning initiative.

[ top ]

  Ranking Process:
Three Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Technical Committees (Human Health, Ecosystems, and Quality of Life) developed numerical scoring systems for the issue areas. The Human Health and Ecosystems Technical Committees scored the issues for each Mississippi county, while the Quality of Life Technical Committee only developed statewide scores. Relying heavily on the Technical Committee reports, the Public Advisory Committee worked with the DEQ to construct the final Statewide Ranking of Risks.

  Participants in the Ranking Process:
Governmental Agencies
Private Sector/Industry
Public Interest/Nonprofit Organizations
Scientific/Academic Community

The Public Advisory Committee included representatives from all of the above stakeholder groups, while the Technical Committees were comprised entirely of Department of Environmental Quality staff.
